Advanced Development Program (ADP)
Founded in 2008 by GDS President and Olympic Gold Medal-winning goaltending coach Mike Buckley, the Advanced Development Program (ADP) was created for elite goalies committed to reaching their highest level. ADP is designed to provide a complete, long-term development path — combining on-ice technical training, mindset performance work, video analysis, and personalized career guidance.
In 2013, ADP was temporarily paused when Mike Buckley joined the Pittsburgh Penguins as Goaltending Coach and Director of Player Development. During that time, the Penguins captured two Stanley Cups with Matt Murray and Marc-Andre Fleury, Tristan Jarry was named an NHL All-Star, and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins produced four consecutive AHL All-Star goaltenders — a first in league history. One of those goaltenders, Casey DeSmith, was a former ADP student.
Now, ADP goalies benefit directly from the NHL, Olympic, and professional development experience gained during that time. The program has returned stronger than ever, with a proven model for developing elite goalies and guiding them to junior, prep school, college, and professional opportunities.
Co-leading the Advanced Development Program is former ADP student and GDS Vice President Steve Mastalerz. Steve is a former Division I goaltender at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a member of the 2015 AHL Calder Cup Champion Manchester Monarchs. He has coached with GDS for nearly a decade and has served as a goalie coach in both the NAHL (Northeast Generals) and ECHL (Manchester Monarchs). Steve credits ADP as a major influence in his own playing and coaching career, and now helps guide the next generation through the same proven pathway.
ADP accepts a limited number of goalies each year who fit the model and are committed to the time, effort, and accountability required to reach elite levels. The program is built for goalies with serious aspirations and the work ethic to match.
