6 Core GDS Fundamentals

Stance

Skating

Our stance provides us with stability, balance and positions our body to be in the best position to execute a save. At GDS we believe your stance is your stance and we do not alter it too much unless it is fundamentally debilitating. Width, height, glove and blocker placement can be as unique as an individual fingerprint. It is important we find what works best for you and your strengths, and it is not important what you look like!
It is always said that goalies should be the best skater on the team. Not true by most accounts, but goalies do need to have finer edge control and explosiveness that comes in the form or shorter, lateral movements.  Some of our skating techniques include: shuffles, c-steps, c-cuts, two-step drops, motion and skulling.

Positioning

GDS has a positional system called BPS. This is one of the most important, if not most imports fundamental of goaltending.  Utilizing the three keys to positioning GDS goaltenders prioritize positioning and play reading. Learning BPS and understanding the relationship between angle, depth and squareness is vital in the success of a goaltender and truly develops a consistent system of play.

Save Selection

Using the correct save selection dictates rebound control and overall control of the game. Various situations will dictate different save selections. Making the appropriate save selection, without thinking and under pressure, is vital to our success.  We utilize a process developed over years of experience to best train goaltenders how to “let the save happen” not “make” the save.

Rebound Control

Often a byproduct of being set in position and utilizing the appropriate save selection. Fewer rebounds means fewer shots, and fewer shots means fewer goals against, which translates into more wins and more playing time.  Take control.

Recovery

Let’s face it, we are going to go down to make most saves. There are many recovery techniques, many of which are very good. At GDS we have developed what we believe is the fastest and most efficient recovery techniques using momentum, balance, strength and very little excessive movement to produce lightning quick recoveries back to our feet.
