In 2013, Coach Buckley was hired by the Pittsburgh Penguins to develop and mentor goalies in the organization. In four years, the AHL affiliate Wilkes-Barre Penguins had a record setting four consecutive AHL ALL-Star goaltenders (Zatkoff, Murray, Jarry and Desmith) under Buckley's coaching. Three of those seasons obtaining the leagues lowest GAA. In both 2016 and 2017 Buckley became a two-time Stanley Cup Champion, the first among US born goalie coaches. In 2019 Tristan Jarry was selected as an NHL All-Star, the fourth NHL All-Star to work with coach Buckley.
Throughout his time as GDS head instructor, over 40 long time GDS goalies have become NCAA Division-one goaltenders with over 90% of long-time students playing at the collegiate level, many of which have gone on to play professionally. Coach Buckley believes in instilling a strong work ethic, confidence and a balanced approach to developing goalies through strong fundamentals, play reading, compete and positioning.

Sean Maguire
GDS Instructor/ Former Student
University of New Hampshire, Goaltending Coach
[email protected]
Sean was a prospect for the Pittsburgh Penguins when he joined Mike Buckley and the GDS family in 2013. Buckley was just hired by the Penguins as the “Goaltending Development Coach” and it was his job to help Sean stay on top of his game before he graduated to Pro Hockey. After training with GDS for a year, Sean started to understand the concepts and quickly noticed how effective they were. Coming from a small coastal town on the west coast of Canada, Sean never had refined goalie coaching from a young age. He was 17 when he met Jeff Battah, his very first goalie coach. Jeff taught him all he knew up to this point often times when training an already-established goaltender it can be difficult to engrain new concepts or techniques into their game, but the GDS concepts are simple and forgiving, giving all likes of style a means to improvement.
Sean payed two full seasons with the Powell River Kings, playing 46 regular season games. In his second season with the Kings, Sean was selected to play for Canada in the IIHF World Junior A Challenge. His team won gold and Sean was named a first team All-Star and awarded goaltender of the tournament posting a GAA. of 1.49 and a .942 SA%. Later on that season Sean was offered a scholarship to Boston University for the start of 2012-2013, and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Forth Round.
Sean started off at BU with high expectations and, at the end of the day, exceeded a lot of them. Throughout his three seasons, he was named Hockey East top performer eleven times. Additionally, Sean was also named 2016 Beanpot MVP and Eberly award winner after stopping 41 shots in a 1-0 overtime loss to Boston College. Sean left Boston University with second highest all-time in Career SA% of .922. Later that year, Sean signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins. There, he was fortunate enough to be a black ace for the 2017 Pittsburgh Penguins' Stanley Cup victory. Sean finished playing professional hockey in the Arizona Coyotes system in 2018.

Alec, a long time student of Coach Buckley's, started training with GDS Goaltending at the age of eight. A native of Nashua, NH, he has worked as an instructor for GDS between lessons and summer camps since 2016. After spending the entirety of his youth career in Nashua, he then played his midget hockey with the Northern Cyclones where he was a league all-star. From there, Alec split his junior hockey career between the Eastern Hockey League's Seacoast Spartans and East Coast Wizards. In his final season with the Wizards, Alec set the EHL record for assists by a goaltender, while also earning an NCAA roster spot at Southern New Hampshire University for the fall of 2018. Primarily filling a backup role for his first two seasons, Alec registered a 1.64 GAA to go along with a .946 SV%, both marks that would rank 1st all-time in program history. Additionally, he earned honors such as NE10 Goaltender of the Week, SNHU Athlete of the Week, and NE10 Academic Honor Roll.
With the 2020-21 season being cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Alec took the opportunity to increase his course load and finish his degree a year early. Ian Edwards
GDS Instructor
University of New Hampshire, Women’s Goaltending Coach
While new to the GDS family, Ian has been helping high-level goaltenders develop for over 15 years. Originally from Linden, Michigan, Ian played his youth hockey in Flint. After years of playing locally, Ian moved away to Northwood School in Lake Placid, NY for his sophomore year of high school. Playing at Northwood allowed Ian the opportunity to play alongside a plethora of future professional players, helping to elevate his understanding of what it takes to get to the college and pro level. After Northwood, Ian did a Post-Graduate year at Bridgton Academy in North Bridgton, Maine. This year at Bridgton allowed him the opportunity to gain numerous college credits, develop both on and off the ice, and concluded with numerous offers to both Division 1 and Division 3 schools.
Ian ultimately decided to become a Nor’easter at the University of New England. A brand new NCAA program at the time, he was able to help backstop a building program and watch it grow into the national power that it is today. Ian graduated with his degree in Medical Biology in 2014 and jumped directly into the coaching world. With coaching stops that include Bridgton Academy, Trine University, New England College and now the University of New Hampshire, he has become a student of the game while keeping his roots in goaltender development.
With a master’s degree in Biomedical Science from Elms college in 2019 and thousands of hours as an academic coach at a Division 1 school, Ian bridges his knowledge of learning and hockey to ensure that his students get the most out of each session. Ian is excited to join the GDS family and aid in the development of young goalies around New England.
